"Operation
6ABC: Save a Life"
WPVI-TV AND FIREFIGHTERS TEAM UP TO SAVE LIVES
We turn to them when trouble strikes, but it is disaster prevention that is really the #1 job of firefighters. That's why WPVI-TV/Channel 6 and local sponsors are teaming up with Delaware Valley firefighters for the eleventh year of "Operation 6ABC: Save a Life", a massive effort to prevent fire tragedies.
What simple step could double your chances of surviving a fire?
Where
do most electrical fires start?
Campaign
spokespersons Dave Roberts and Cecily Tynan, of Action News,
will answer these and other important safety questions throughout January
on Channel 6, both in special Action News "Operation 6ABC:Save
a Life" reports and in fire safety tips. Channel 6
will also distribute 100,000 door hangers that include a life-saving fire
safety checklist. The door hangers can be picked up at St.
Christopher's Hospital for Children, and St.
Agnes Medical Center. A
cornerstone of the program is the distribution of smoke alarms to people in
need. This year, 6ABC President and General Manager Dave Davis will present
15,000 smoke alarms donated by Kidde.
"Year after year, we hear stories of lives saved by donated smoke detectors," 6ABC President and General Manager Dave Davis, remarked. "It is truly our privilege to be able to play a role in assisting local firefighters and residents of the Delaware Valley."
Over sixty fire departments in the tri-state area will receive the donation. The local fire departments will install the new smoke alarms in homes of low income, elderly, and other residents at risk in their respective communities. Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Harold B. Hairston will accept the donations on behalf of the participating fire departments and fire companies in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
The Philadelphia
Fire Academy is located at 5200 Pennypack Street in Philadelphia.
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American
Red Cross is proud to serve the Delaware Valley! The chapter provides
disaster relief and lifesaving skills for 3.2 million people in Philadelphia,
Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware and Chester Counties. And thanks to our volunteers
- your neighbors - we’re there every minute of every day. Last year, we responded
to more than 900 disasters in our community, helping 4,500 men, women and
children with food, clothing and lodging. Most of those disasters were fires,
so we urge you to take a moment and be sure your home is safe.
